Globally renowned Dutch leaders in the field of genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and data integration & analysis joined forces to realize the Netherlands X-omics Initiative in 2018. Together, they are expanding the strong Dutch ‘omics’ technology footprint with innovations that 1. push the boundaries of the individual omics technologies focussing on next generation sequencing, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics, and 2. realize a common data integration and analysis framework to drive high-quality X-omics studies. The ultimate aim of the infrastructure is to enable ground-breaking biological and medical science to map mechanisms of health and disease, including the resistance to targeted therapy in cancer, the links between the gut microbiome and vascular diseases and neurodegeneration, targets for cancer vaccines and cancer immunotherapy, cellular organization and many other pressing societal questions.

In 2018, the Netherlands X-omics Initiative started as an integrated combination of analytical omics facilities in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and data analysis, integration & stewardship, organised in 4 pillars. It was built upon previous national initiatives (e.g. the Netherlands Genomics Initiative, Netherlands Proteomics Centre, NWO Roadmap facility Proteins@Work, Netherlands Metabolomics Centre, Netherlands Bioinformatics Centre and Netherlands Biomarker Development Center) and is well embedded in European research programs and Research Infrastructures (ESFRIs) such as EATRIS, BBMRI and INSTRUCT . In addition, X-omics is embedded in or linked to national data-driven initiatives (such as Health-RI, ELIXIR-NL, anDREA to name a few) stimulating the open science policy of the Netherlands.
Details and links to our laboratory facilities can be found at www.x-omics.nl. In summary, the genomics pillar includes core facilities at UMC Utrecht (Utrecht Sequencing Facility) and Radboudumc (Radboudumc Genomics Technology Center) that together have over 35 next generation sequencers ranging from high content Whole Genome Sequencers to high throughput lower content sequencers, combined with automation systems, HPC and analysis software. The proteomics pillar includes facilities at Utrecht University (Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry & Proteomics), Netherlands Cancer Institute, Radboudumc (Translational Metabolic Laboratory) that together, in combination with the protein biomarker validation facilities at ErasmusMC and Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, have over 40 mass spectrometers, ranging from ultra-high resolution QTOF MS to high-throughput QqQ MS systems. The metabolomics pillar includes University Leiden (Division of Analytical BioSciences at the Leiden Academic Centre of Drug Research), LUMC (Proteomics and Metabolomics Laboratory), ErasmusMC and Radboudumc (Translational Metabolic Laboratory) that together cover over 30 mass spectrometers, again ranging from high resolution to high throughput systems.
A wide variety of research is facilitated by the X-omics infrastructure, ranging from biomedical investigations into mechanisms of health and disease, biology of cell metabolism, biomarker validations, analytical biotechnological optimisations, population research to name a few.
